Around Santa Clara, I think the last of the ex-Nortel spaces got leased out a long time ago. I remember we posted Nick Lippis's photo of the ex-ex-SynOptics building getting changed to Avaya.
> Federal Government of Canada already owns the last large campus in Ottawa. A pity....
Ah, that is a pity. Seems like an unglorious end.
Then again, are campuses in vogue for companies these days? Forget Google. I mean regular companies. I seem to remember a point in the '90s where anybody building a campus was doomed. It was a lot like stadium-naming rights.
But it still has a Nortel logo, next to all the other logos (Ciena, Ericsson, Avaya) and (I believe) still some Nortel staff doing "transition support" for the other guys.
When Genband opened HQ in Frisco the death knell for Richardson as Telecom Corrirdor was gonged.
HP, Genband, Ericsson, Symantec, others are ALL in far North Plano on the tollway near Frisco border. Frisco is where all their employees live. Huge mall (yuck) lots of new housing, new schools and every chain restaurant you'd ever want.
The Richardson era is over. Old buildings, schools overrun, NT buildings now housing Sherman Williams paint and other old line companies.
MetroPCS is still in the old MCI building, but they'll realize soon they made a mistake and move NW to where their employees live.
Sad to see it happen for Richardson, but it's time to move the remaining tech companies NW to Frisco. Talent pool in Richardson has moved on to where the tech jobs are.
You mean the "Main Airport Center" building, close to Frankfurt Airport. As far as I know there is still some Nortel admin staff there, winding down Nortel Germany. E&Y has an office there, they will be the last ones walking out.
Sad, indeed. That's when you know you are getting old, when an area that was once young and hot is relegated to second-class status. I remember, in the post-divestiture days, when Nortel and companies such as DSC Communications, Rockwell, Fujitsu, Alcatel and Nokia were build facilities in Richardson. There was a large hotel there - a Sheraton, I think -- where you could sit in the bar and overhear remarkable stuff, including tons of fun rumors.
I think I developed my fondness for chardonnay in that hotel bar, or at least, honed it.
There was a Nortel sign on the building just behind the Hyatt near Dulles (IAD) airport until about 3 months ago. It is gone now. I'm relatively sure that the operation there was shut down some time ago though. It wasn't that big (~ 10 - 20 people) when I was in it about 4 years ago to use their conference room. The facilities person was tickled at that point for additional justification to keep the place lit.

During the bubble, Nortel expanded to some other leased offices right near Intel, IIRC. I don't think those lasted long.
