re: Nortel Issues Damage Report I don't think that CSCO will buy NT

I read on a Yahoo message board
that CSCO admitted in their 10K
that they are looking at 10 privately
held (not publicly traded) companies.
I am not sure if they can deviate from
that

Not true.

re: Nortel Issues Damage Report I agree with you, the channel is a problem. You could make it easier for the channel with a stronger message though.

I think the idea of them dropping their pants to get in the enterprise is accurate. EMC was very successful doing that vs IBM a while back.

They need to start getting market share, by hook or by crook.

There is no clear #2 vendor in the enterprise space and I think the market is waiting for SOMEONE to step up.

re: Nortel Issues Damage Report You're right, it probably won't happen; but it sure is entertaining to visualize Roth in the next shareholder's meeting, addressing John Chambers as "Mr. CEO". It may even be worth buying enough NT stock to get into the meeting just to watch it firsthand.

re: Nortel Issues Damage Report "why would Roth have to face Chambers? Roth is no longer runnign the show at Nortel."

As a shareholder in the audience. :)

ROTH: "Excuse me Mr. CEO, but I have a few ideas that may help the stock price.

CHAMBERS: Shut up and sit down, you inconsequential peon!!!

re: Nortel Issues Damage Report "The Accelear 8600 was renamed to Passport 8600. There is no Optera Metro 8600."

--------------------------------------------------

optical_man:

It's an easy mistake to make though. When NT bought Cambrian, they seemed to change *all* their product names to Optera Metro xxx. I was always expecting to get an email from product management saying the DMS-100 would now be called the Optera Metro 100. :)

The Accelear 8600 was renamed to Passport 8600. There is no Optera Metro 8600.
Another Bay box you may have heard of is the Contivity VPN product line, they're doing very well. Also acquired by Bay just before the NT merger. "

You are correct. I forgot they retagged the Accelar 8600 (which still wasn't working well when I left) to the Passport namebadge. Does it work finally?
Also, the contivity that was bought by bay. Yes, a good box, but no further development happened since 1999 on it. Last I heard, checkpoint firewall wanted huge percentages to oem their s/w to nortel and nortel said no. Hows the old contivity doing these days? My major issue with the contivity (liked it, it works well) was that nortel never could match the marketing power of cisco, so even if it was better, I saw it losing market share the the 'machine on tasman drive'.

re: Nortel Issues Damage Report The really only decent box bay bought was Centillion 6years ago and they killed it. Guess what the Centillion group went and formed Foundry the highest performance, high wirespeed port count in the smallest footprint in the L2/L3 space.
Nortel should follow Bays lead and reconnect with the Foundry people. Of course Bobby Johnson would merely laugh at them
