Save American Jobs. This is the only way to do it.

By keeping jobs in Ottawa

re: Nortel Beefs Up Offshore Development "At least one, who asked not to be named, says the move could hit Nortel workers in facilities based in Richardson, Texas; Calgary, British Columbia; and Ottawa, France, and Brazil."

*Cringe* Calgary is in Alberta, Ottawa is a city in Ontario.

Cheers.

"Outsourcing the weaving of baseball gloves to Taiwan is one thing, but outsourcing R&D is another."

Every one is jumping on the band-wagon of outsourcing. We can't judge from the crowd now the effect of outsourcing; Moment of truth of how effective these operations are will come in a couple of years.

Have you heard the story of 3 envelopes? Now, instead of re-org, comapnies who can't deliver here send jobs offshore.

re: Nortel Beefs Up Offshore Development Historically, whenever jobs are exported overseas, nobody in the food chain benefits.

1) From a quality point of view, the consumer always suffers. It is rare that stuff made overseas is better in quality than "Made in USA" merchandise. The same arguement certainly applies to R & D.

2) The moral and productivity of the remaining employees in a company (farming out work) always drops. I pretty sure the remaining Nortel guys are scared stiff after 2/3 of the company was hatched (as a result of incompetent upper management: Roth, Dunn, et al.) and now add the fact they are talking about farming work out to India.

3) The actual people doing the work in overseas countries are always exploited for the benefit of a few. It common practice to use prisoners (who committed serious crimes like "talk negatively of the existing government") in China or children in places like India & Pakistan to do this cheap labor. Say what you will about unions, but at least most of them do look after the interests of their employees.
