re: Multiservice Switches mu-law,

"data gear"?? You've just declared your ignorance of core multiservice switches and the market that Marconi appears to be going after with the BXR-48000.

They've made it very clear that they are not going after the "data" SPs where there is no money to be made nor any life as an equipment vendor (look at Yipes, Foundry, Riverstone, Extreme...need I go further).

The Fed's love the ATM/multiservice switch gear that's come out of FORE Systems/Marconi...

"The company said its working partnership with the federal government has resulted in an installed network base that exceeds $1.3 billion." (from earlier post/article)

...apparently FORE/Marconi has been doing something right for quite a while.

Goodness... I assume this is sarcasm! There are some startups that are better capitalized than this company. Marconi has never had any measurable traction with SPs in NA for data gear for a number of other very good reasons, and I cannot see how the current situation would do anything but reduce their odds.

Thats not really true. Some of the largest Internet backbones deployed the Fore ASX switch to provide a layer-2 ATM VC layer connecting the routers. I don't have a complete list becuase I never worked for Marconi, but Uunet and Cable & Wireless were two of the larger customers. I know that AT&T has some as well. And despite all the talk about migrating to MPLS, I hear that some of those switches are still in operation.

Marconi/Fore never was big in the Frame/ATM public service networks. I think Sprint was the only big customer in the US. Can't say about overseas.

Maybe someone else would want to provide some first hand knowledge?

re: Multiservice Switches No sarcasm meant here as questioned. I tend to stay away from childish rhetoric. You'll generally find that what I have to contribute will be done with meaningful purpose, unlike what has been demonstrated about politics in the previous portion of the thread. I certainly may not always be right *wink*, but at least I have conviction about what it is I am writing.

To add to the list of SP's with Marconi gear, it's quite fair to say that many MSO's (cable companies) have a fairly broad base of their equipment.

That also brings up a very good point about the state of the industry. MSO's have a "plum" position in the market. Not all, mind you, but there are a few that will provide serious competition to the LEC's and have already done so in strategic markets.

Back to my original point though. Marconi will do well with SP's. I have no doubt. Just because a start-up has capital doesn't hold any weight with me. Marconi has proven products...one's that can stand on their own feet. They will clearly do well in the market - NM

It is common knowledge that AT&T has a very large core of
Lucent (C500/550) for ATM and Cisco (BPX/MGX) for ATM,
FR, and MPLS VPN. The Fore gear was leftover from
the TCG (Teleport) CLEC purchase and not a platform
standarized at the carrier.
