re: Lumentis Bursts Into 3G I am not sure it is safe to push the entire restoration function up to the ATM layer in a UMTS RAN.

Doesn't this push too much onto the already stripped down ATM functions in most base stations?

By the way, what is the real cost saving in removing the SDH restoration function - most of that is now well established code and/or hardware and so it must cost them heaps in development effort to remove it (unless they never had it in the first place???)

re: Lumentis Bursts Into 3G Packets in the RAN better match the backhaul traffic characteristics, presumably more IP as data services grow. Such traffic is more efficiently carried using statistical multiplexing. Some efficiencies are even possible carrying the radio control and call frames.

Perhaps a better question is why use ATM at all? Why not avoid wasting 10+ percent of the expensive backhaul bandwidth on cell overhead, and go straight to IP packets?
