re: Light Reading University Is Now Open To call yourself a university don't you need some
sort of accredation by either a State or Federal
Department of Education? Or can I just hang a shingle outside of my house declaring my space
to be Optical Weenie U?

Actually, don't you need to be accredited so that people who pay to take your course and want to deduct that cost from their taxes can do so?

Short answer: no

Long answer: The word "university" has already been exploited by numerous companies. See Ciena's Optical University. See JDSU's JDSUniversity

re: Light Reading University Is Now Open The first course -- Integrating IP and Optical Technology -- costs $299, which affords access to all the course modules for six months, including guest lectures. Students who enroll by January 31st qualify for a $50 discount and a free Light Reading University T-shirt.

---------
Short answer:
JDSUniversity and Ciena's Optical University are free! except for the T-shirt.

re: Light Reading University Is Now Open
I hardly think having a bunch of Internet geeks in the same school compares to the list of rock legends mentioned (and how the hell did *Oasis* get in there? some Lightreading editor must have caught a glimpse of his 9 year old kid's music collection 7 years ago, when that band had one quarter-original release).

The LR self-promotion machine rolls on, and we eat it up.

re: Light Reading University Is Now Open lastmile says : JDSUniversity and Ciena's Optical University are free!

Well, well, you bitch about those pesky customers allegedly wanting everything for free; you bellow in favor of RBOCs and against what you ignorantly call a 'free ride' on 'their' networks, and now you have the gall to criticize through inuendo, the fact that LR is going to charge for classes??? Unbelievable.

Why don't you give LRU a chance ferchrisssakes! Industry experts aren't free and have day jobs; preparing, organizing, and creating the graphics for classes is time-consuming. What they are doing has valuable potential.

Is it that RBOCs are the only ones in your book that are allowed to charge money??? To use your words, how many times have you been a free-rider, piggybacking on LR's free content and services??

re: Light Reading University Is Now Open Will there be athletic scholarships? A Greek system? I've got a hazing idea - make pledges listen to a two hour Movaz lecture about the benefits of GMPLS.

re: Light Reading University Is Now Open So if Oasis is the wannabe-Beatles in your analogy, who's the wannabe-Yakov in your lineup? Come on, be honest, who's the filler...

re: Light Reading University Is Now Open Thanks Hyperunner. We will be selling the guest lectures as separate entities.
