re: Calix Strikes BackOK, let's accept for the moment the thesis that Calix is doomed. Despite a large market share in legacy products, they have been unable to develop a viable next-gen product. Now what? Who benefits here and how?
By various accounts, including those on this site, Occam is taking share at the tier 3 carriers. They appear to have an excellent product that is getting good traction in the industry. Occam has made good progress some of the larger independents such as Fairpoint. They are now targeting the Embarqs and Windstreams of the world, where Calix has incumbency.
What's going to happen and why?
Embarq has tested Occam in a first application and as far as I know the results have been positive. If you are Embarq, what do you do?
I am not sure who Calix's large customers are but I think they are a lot of the tier 2's like Embarq, Windstream, CenturyTel, etc. What are they going to do when they need to go next-gen? Will they go with a mediocre OEM'ed Calix solution or will they go with Occam or will they go with another vendor?
re: Calix Strikes BackCalix has good transport products for SONET/ATM networks. They play well in older networks for clients that do not want to admit that ATM is dieing. Their star has peaked, its all downhill now. The real scary ones are the Chinese companies that sell at or below COGs and subsidize these huge conglomerates to take most of the international business away from US companies. DSL port prices are less than 40 bucks in most countries except the USA.
Nope.
