re: Light Reading's Top Ten Private CompaniesIsn't procket the guys from that Saturday night live skit, where those Euro-modern german guys wuth their own talk show say "this is the time on Prokets when we dance." and then they get up and dance all wierd and stuff....are these the same guys?
re: Light Reading's Top Ten Private Companies BTW. In fact Unisphere is about 4 Private companies rolled into one. Castle Networks, Argon, Redstone Telecom and Broadsoft.
Not sure which one of these is responsible for helping Unispehere to win LR #1 position in your Top Ten, I suspect that it is in fact Redstone Telecom the original private company that built the ERX platform.
The ERX is where Unisphere are making their money right now, this box is a BRAS. (broadband remote access server/edge router) it sits at the edge of carrier networks and provides Internet access for DSL connected customers.
Not sure where the "Light" comes in, but perhaps interesting "Reading"?
How about a top ten optical nursury rhymes?
#1 Old Macdonald had a farm, EOEOE... #2 Humpty Huber sat on a wall ..... #3 Mary had a little Lambda, it fleeced a lot of VC's. #4 Jack and Jill went up the hill to raise a second round, Jack came down with half a crown and made Jill redundant!
re: Light Reading's Top Ten Private CompaniesSteve - Good research! Thankfully, my career does not hinge on evaluating start-ups from a distance.
For what it's worth, I didn't spend exhaustive hours to come up with a list - I simply rattled a few off the top of my head; a grand total of 3 minutes went in to my "research". Anyway, 100% of the ones I mentioned are still alive and at various stages of evolution.
re: Light Reading's Top Ten Private CompaniesIf Lightreading is going to remove them from the Top 10 list for being bought shouldn't they at least be placed in the liquidity bin?
re: Light Reading's Top Ten Private Companies I think the UniSphere/BROADsoft merger was terminated back in June.
So Unisphere really is Argon, Castle and Redstone. Of these I hear that the only product to really make it big is the ERX from Redstone .... check out the UniSphere press releases for 2001 ... you'll find lots of customer announcements for ERX, not quite so many for the SMX.
re: Light Reading's Top Ten Private CompaniesMEMS stands for Micro Electro Mechanical Systems and optical switching is only one of its many applications. The most common use of MEMS technology is in airbags !!
So, optical switching might be in trouble but MEMS is not. BTW MEMS in optical networks is not limited to switches, MEMS rae used to produce OADM, VOA, Equalizers, Channel monitors, etc.
re: Light Reading's Top Ten Private CompaniesOMM was # 1 last time...now OUT...is it company or the MEMS switch...even Caliant is out as well.....means Optical Switching is not there anymore....where does it leave to ONIX, MEMX, etc...I guess let's talk about how many companies will go bust who are trying to develop MEMS based optical switch......any comment guys
re: Light Reading's Top Ten Private CompaniesI am more interested in MEMS applicable for optical switch...what happened to OMM and Caliant from Top 3 to go under...what does it mean for other companies who are wokring in that MEMS bases Optical Swtching?????

Please address the concern that Unisphere is not really an optical company.
Thanks
