Oh, no doubt about that. The spin-job is not very subtle. And I am sure the Procket official that went through the motions and made those statements didn't much enjoy it, either. On the other hand, we know the sacred rituals of our industry, and how supposedly we're always supposed to spin even the negatives as a positive unless we have the guts to utterly alienate some powerful elements in the mix...

We are quick to point out "how can they?", but when it's our turn, often we try to do exactly the same thing... :-)

Pablo, I'll give you credit for pointing out that a lay off is not a workforce restructuring, but it still sounds bad.

...and, to be honest, I'd have little sympathy with employees that get caught venting on public message boards, blatantly violate confidentiality ethics and basically backstab the team of people they work with day after day. These boards can get pretty disgraceful, but then again the Jeckyl-Hyde-effect of sitting behind an anonymous terminal (if such a thing exists :) amazes me every time.

Sometimes the poweful need a reality check. I think a lot of execs in this industry are reluctant to admit they read these message boards when their companies are mentioned in a story. Then they ask someone in IT check the firewall and hunt down employees that have gone "off the reservation".

re: Is Procket Heading Toward the Edge? Pablo: I will agree to you marginally about employees back-stabbing the team.

But what the F'* about then VCs and management selling out employees when their bets don't pan out. Why throw away some seleted employees and keep some?Let the whole ship sink together.(BTW, I don't work for JNPR,Procket or Cisco)

If you believe in soul catharsis and the true freedom for business to operate- why F'ing restrict employees rights to vent. Consider that a normal part of challenge to succeed in business too. Anyway, I am digressing from the point. Somebody well said, successful people need reality check too rather than keep milking their previous success and perception.(

re: Is Procket Heading Toward the Edge? What good is a software guru if there isn't any hardware to port it to? These guys have been rumoured to be core, edge, metro, all over the map. With one pass of failed ASICs means another 12-18 months to respin asics, get the software to work, and get platform validated. See you next year...hope the money will last.

re: Is Procket Heading Toward the Edge? Juniper became what it is today becuase it had 2 things going for it:

-Technology that was an order of magnitude better than existing equipment.
-Introduced at a time when carriers were spending incredible amounts of money on gear.

There is only a very slim chance that any company could replicate just one of these conditions.

Nearly impossible to replicate both...

re: Is Procket Heading Toward the Edge? tsat,

Left out one more thing Juniper had going:

Cisco had the only working Internet class routers. The ISPs wanted 2 to keep Cisco honest and therefore sponsored Juniper. That condition no longer exists.

Don't forget that ISPs invest a lot of overhead in training, management, etc. for each vendor they support. They grudingly support 2 vendors because it gives them leverage.

re: Is Procket Heading Toward the Edge?
You are right - they appear to be more hype than substance. I did speak to some insiders and it appears that they are no where near any real product, and over all situation seems to be pretty confused with regards to what they want to build. Doesn't sound too good!

The real companies build products not hype. Actually, most hyped companies have no substance behind them accept a good PR firm. Real products are made by good engineering teams - not by having good PR and Marketing teams who will do a press release every time one guy moved from one cubicle to another in the office.

The real companies have products that are close to GA or under beta trials. Yes- there good start ups in every segment that have working products in trials. These are the start ups that have true chance of succeeding and making an impact on the market this year. To me it appears that Procket is NOT in this category.

Hyped companies have virtual ware that resides on power point slides. Once the reality sinks in - engineering staff disappears, so called successful team suddenly start looking mediocre and VCs start running away. Procket belongs here.
They have just too much technology risk and too much hype to be true.

Everybody that has done his homework on Juniper knows that they had the best sales team in the industry. Scott Kriens is the most gifted strategic salesperson you'll ever come across. Kriens didn't bring any major engineering brilliance to Juniper. But if you think his impact on the company's success was negligible, there's probably several bridges on your name already, and I'd like to sell you another. :-)
