re: iPad Data Plans: Same As It Ever Was

Really isn't much to chose between these plans is there?

This is kind of like engineering a car that can reach 300 mph. The local speed limit is still 65 more or less. Doesn't matter what the monthly fee is -- there's only so much Megan Fox mobile networks can handle.

$30/month for 3GB

At least 3GB for a high def movie download

So, it will cost you at least $30 for watching an HD movie on the iPad!

Movie theater tickets are a a bargain by comparison.

I'm keen on the idea of a shared data bucket from carriers that can be shared amongst your devices. Not seen one offered yet though.

Essentially is that not the idea of tethering?

Remember when you thought long and hard about how many minutes your plan should have and whether you can share them with the rest of the family?  Rollover minutes, etc.

GBytes will eventually get there (more for less, shareable, etc.), but only when the providers have some new thing they can hook you with.  Somehow mobile providers have been able to keep their revenues and profits while the fixed guys have been losing their head and blaming it on us.

The iPad is just the leading edge of this though. (I tend to break Apple gear at a rapid rate myself so I won't be getting another one.) I'm talking about a BIG bucket of data I can share amongst say a laptop, a tablet and a smartphone. They start doing that right and we can talk about cable-cutting for real....

Dan,

You know what they say when you buy a Rolls Royce: don't ask about the cost of an oil change.

If you buy an iPad, you have enough money to buy 20GB of bandwidth, watch YouTube and play Words with Friends.

Yes. 5GB is no where close to enough though. Super stingy when you've bought the iPad outright and LTE is supposed to be cheaper per bit. (Ha, ha, ha.)

Depends where you are. In rural areas, Verizon would love to swap DSL users onto LTE. It would save a bundle on copper plants.
