I asked HP what happens when every switch vendor offers OpenFlow support on all their products. This announcement was novel, but it's certainly not going to be unique.

The answer was that HP could make use of its enterprise software knowledge.  "We do understand what happens when you roll out SAP or Microsoft Exchange services, in great depth -- more depth than our competitors," said Bethany Mayer, interim senior VP of HP Networking.

So, HP might be better suited to dealing with it when users bring new devices and unknown applications into the enterprise network, for instance.

That's the theory anyway. It won't be long before lots of other vendors have announcements like this one; HP just happened to be first.
