re: Ennovate Shuts Down Moneyman,

I agree with your observation - I failed to proof read my previous posting the sentence in 7 should have read "that may be good model to run a church but not a start up in a very brutal market."

Thanks for correction.

Agree/disagree:

" 7. Use small focussed engineering teams each lead by someone who is empowered to make all decisions about that team. Don't undercut the team leader. The biggest problem with ennovate was that first tier engineering management was week and second tier management either didn't exist or was irrelevant in the decsion making since all decisions were centralized. That is good model to run a church but not a start up in a very brutal market."

Actually, it's especially bad to run a church that way as well.

I'm at a new church and a new company that both are 100% decentralized and incredibly team oriented - an incredible difference!

Eveyone learns through the interaction, and most are now qualified to be CTO or pastor at your average net company or church.

The world does not need anymore Jim Jones/Jim Bakers/Omar Mullahs ...

re: Ennovate Shuts Down

jasmine
laurel networks
polaris (the god-box)
movaz
pluris
iris labs

Some of these companies may already be gone.
I dont closely watch most of these anyway.
Gotham (already mentioned) would be high on
any list.

The people most likely to die are either in
crowded markets (edge routers, metro-anything)
or want to change out all the technology in
the providers network (some of the mpls ones).

re: Ennovate Shuts Down Basing on my experiences from hundreds of box vendor projects (and selling off-the-shelf distributed HA datamanagement software) during the past couple of years, there is a lot of truth in these comments.
Many of the companies loosing the game right now have tried to engineer all the software pieces from ground up themselves.
Many of the companies doing strongly today made it to the market early and in time, partially because of strong engineering and engineering management, and partially because of their will to accept third party code/products/frameworks as part of their software implementation - and also because they used professional services to get the software project done properly and in time (most of the engineers in these projects are very strong on the hardware side).

re: Ennovate Shuts Down I'll take Ellacoya and Astral Point, but not the others. They REALLY have a fighting chance! How come no one has mentioned Unisphere?
