NT
LU
RBAK
COSN

Start-up are suppose to come and go: nature of the capitalistic beast. The real fallout for the industry are the "established" players.

re: Ennovate Shuts Down My job search has taken me to a lot of these companies and many not mentioned such as Internet Photonics, Accelight, and Jedai. Here's what I'm seeing:
1) most of these companies were started with the idea of developing a hot technology and then selling out to LU, CSCO, or NT. Now that the easy outs are gone the execs are trying to figure out how to actually grow a business. Most don't have a clue. But this may explain why the Cabletron spin offs are doing well (six straight quarters of growth for Enterasys!)

2) How can you tell who might make it? First, look for a lack of hype. Those that resist issueing a press release every time the CEO farts have probably learned the difference between creating a buzz and real marketing. They've learned that being on everyone lips is less valuable than being in someone's POP, so they're developing real products with real differentiation and value propositions and telling those that need to hear it a believable story.

Also look for services. No one will buy any product unless there is a logistical process for getting spares out quickly, a website full of self help docs, and a 24/7 TAC to connect customers with engineers.

Sure, a lot of the companies mentioned will fail because they are creating "me too" products will little or no differentiated value. But just because a company has "gone quiet" doesn't mean they are dying. It just means they're figuring out how to run a business and you'll hear from them when they have something real to say.

re: Ennovate Shuts Down Quarry is tremendously late with their product. One of the earlier plans was to bne shipping earlier this year. Now revenue doesn't possible until early next year (if at all). The fact that they created a little brother to the iQ8000 before it even started shipping points to the possibility that potential customers didn't like the huge 8000. These guys are a good candidate for start-up afterlife.

Ellacoya always has been. I'm surprised Ennovate held on as long as they did and even had a recent press release about European activities. Long live Tachcoyavate the uber god (is dead) box, Mr CLEC have I got something for you company!

re: Ennovate Shuts Down Ok, So the deadpool is based on a combination of fact, rumor, speculation and the need to grind an axe.

What about a survival pool? Which companies do you think have the best chance of "making" it and what criteria do you base this on?

re: Ennovate Shuts Down These threads are great. I have mixed emotions about the dead pool. Although i enjoy the messages posted as a source of humor, at the end of the day it doesn't help any of us for the market to continue to fail. I for one wish that no more will fail...but when in Rome...Do as the Romans. Here is what i have heard over the last couple of days, all from engineers at the companies:
QB- 50% layoff. They got funding, but half what they needed.
Crater- The hand cuffs are true.
Tenor- There have been some resumes coming out of there.

re: Ennovate Shuts Down Couldn't help but draw a parallel to the cart of death in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

I'd add Tenor to the not-quite-dead-yet list:
they built it, it blows the socks off the big boys' boxes, but they're still "waiting for them to come" in this crappy market situation. I think they have as good a chance as anyone to pull through and avoid being thrown on the proverbial death cart.

re: Ennovate Shuts Down > i enjoy the messages posted as a source of humor

It is actually more than that, We cannot have a seminar how-not-to-run-start-up-learn-from-other's-mistakes-before-it-is-too-late simply because it does not seem appropriate to publicly rub noses of otherwise pretty decent and generally not so dumb people, who in the most cases just got carried by their own hype.

> it doesn't help any of us for the market to continue to fail

I hope it will help some, I would only want for information to be more accurate sometimes.

Thanks,
