hey, thats "rich" useful idiots to you.... :) go csco. /gd.
Apparently, huge capitalistic enterprises like Google and Cisco have no qualms about getting in bed with Chinese Dictators? This is a snake with two heads and it will most definitely bite, as Google has expereinced recently, with more to come no doubt.
re: China Censorship Debate Circles CiscoCan they set up a backdoor encryption crack that my 15 year old neighbor won't get the word on on IRC at three in the morning? That's always my fear with these things. If it was monitorable only by people you want monitoring it, fine.
re: China Censorship Debate Circles CiscoRe: "Not sure what you're smelling. Are you implying that if Cisco did more government business it wouldn't be in the hot seat regarding censorship in China?"
Nope. Rather that the debate around american companies helping the Chinese government controlling its citizens, is a convenient way for Wahington to direct the attention away from the domestic issues. Such as Cisco and Google helping the US government controlling its citizens.
Of course the US government is hesitant regarding outright censorship, but when it comes to spying I wonder how large the difference between US and China really is. Put it this way: If Nixon was the president today, he wouldn't use hidden microphones in a hotel room to get the information he needed.
I'm not saying Bush is Nixon, but the tools for the president are more powerful than ever.
re: China Censorship Debate Circles Cisco"What is Cisco and Google doing for the US government?"
The answer is literally anything they want, any time.
Now featuring warrantless wiretaps with full bandwidth (yes, Virginia, significant percentages of the worlds communication pipes, in near real time) internet and phone screening, made perfectly legal by outsourcing.
Re-route calls or emails to foreign country X, do the tapping / screening / voice recognition / keyword search there, send the collections back to the NSA through leased fiber.
re: China Censorship Debate Circles Cisco"I'm not saying Bush is Nixon, but the tools for the president are more powerful than ever."
What bugs me more is the thought that non-US agents, lawful or not, with enough money/talent will be able to do this by developemnt, bribery or theft. Tools available to the Prez will also be available to his enemies. Imagine a foreign organization able to blackmail our people/politicians with information technology.
re: China Censorship Debate Circles CiscoAs information tech changes the world, we will need to establish new codes of conduct, such as what is moral or not. Are cookies moral? Any spyware? What do we do with hackers? What legal juristiction rules what part of a computer-based transaction? How to collect taxes? Protect children from predators? Pay for anything? What is "privacy"? What is intellectual property and copyright any more?
The fact that congress makes these folks whipping boys for work they should be doing between themselves and the chinese government shows how clueless they are. Easier to blow people up than to understand policy.
