re: Chiaro Debuts a Big, Bad Router mr. shmo,

Based on your last two posts it's quite obvious you work for Juniper... Of course you don't want to see any startup in the core space - the reality is that Juniper is the most vulnerable to any startup that provides a technologically superior product. Juniper has touted for years how better their products were in terms of density, scalability and reliability. So what happens when a couple of startups beat them at their own game?

Of course, you probably believe that you are beating cisco in the core and have that whole edge market figured out too. BTW, how's that whole junisphere thing working for you? I heard that several large potential customers were quite upset when they were inundated with multiple account teams from both companies....

re: Chiaro Debuts a Big, Bad Router Not sure about the pay cut thing at Procket but it doesn't surprise me.

Can anyone verify the Juniper/Verizon rumor? That Verizon contract was sought after by many so if it really is Juniper that got it they're on a major roll. Verizon is looking to spend 300M + in the next 2 years.

re: Chiaro Debuts a Big, Bad Router Signmeup,

Or should I say, Cisco employee? I like to see startups out there making things happen as much as anyone. However, after being a casualty of the bubble myself, I'm not blind to the fact that consolidation is not over yet.

As a Juniper customer, I can tell you the Junisphere thing seems to be going well. The proof is in the customer wins that Juniper has had since the purchase.

"All PRO/8812 chassis are designed to be clustered for scale, Procket says."

I don't see any more information regarding clustering on the web site; perhaps still in development?

re: Chiaro Debuts a Big, Bad Router Also, wasn't Tony on the board?

He is not there now and he seems to have been replaced by Bill Lynch. Is this old news? I seem to have missed the press release.

Tony, care to comment?

re: Chiaro Debuts a Big, Bad Router Several vendors have tried this clustering stuff in vain. Avici talked about this but have they deployed any routers in such a configuration?

Has Juniper?

re: Chiaro Debuts a Big, Bad Router Sure, I can make a router cluster.
Take some ports you paid big $$$ for and tie some
routers together. Viola, cluster.

re: Chiaro Debuts a Big, Bad Router No, no, no,

I am not a cisco employee; if you look at my posts you will clearly see that I am no cisco lover.

The fact of the matter is that if Juniper OR Cisco had been doing things the way they SHOULD have been done in the first place there would never be an opportunity for a startup to gain entry into the core market. Now you can argue that there hasn't been any new players with big wins in the core market for a long time, and I wouldn't disagree with you. However that has as much to do with the economy than anything else.

Frankly I would like to see some new blood in the core market - I would like to see a router that can scale without having to replace the chassis/backplane/linecards/PIC/media adapters/switch fabrics/route processors/so on and so forth. I would like to see a router that provides better software reliability without sacrificing flexibility. I would like to see a router that actually does line-rate 40byte packets WITH services enabled at 10GE or OC-192.

I think you get the picture.

Competition is good - except for those that lose out.

re: Chiaro Debuts a Big, Bad Router signmeup,

In all fairness, Juniper is on their 3rd generation and selling T-series in as many as 33 accounts (from their last conference call).

Granted, the M160 was a total disaster, but their T-320 is really a nice aggregation box.

Has anyone else been able to get their box tested by a 3rd party where they loaded as many as 32 OC-192 ports? Granted, it was a point-to-point mesh so it probably did not test the system architecture. But the truth of the matter is they agreed to be tested by a 3rd party.
