re: Carrier Spending Hopes Dim LR,

At the time, the article seemed objective enough. Having long-term experiences with the ATT/RBOCS mentality, it is not surprising how they like to make their vendors "dance to the bullets". It is a very common practice to "kick the tires" and then completely walk away. Let's not forget that they were all hatched from the same egg/test tube.

Regards

re: Carrier Spending Hopes Dim I think people read what they wanted to in the BellSouth article. For example, anybody with stock and/or options in optical companies are reaching for ANYTHING that can be spun positively. You should have seen the reaction at the CORV board when the article came out...

And yet Scott is right, the article was pretty objective, pointing out that RFPs and RFIs mean little to nothing nowadays. It's all a matter of what you're looking for...

re: Carrier Spending Hopes Dim What about the rest of the world? Is there any hope in Asia? Europe? I thought that wireless was driving Asian and European growth?

Zoinks!

re: Carrier Spending Hopes Dim "Globally" today just means "look at the US".
Once you have done that, you'll see in Europe the same trends, with higher minima and much lower maxima.

How about Asia?

Cheers

re: Carrier Spending Hopes Dim "It should come as no surprise that foreign investors have lost in the upwards of $8 Trillions forever. This is a form of economic terrorism the likes of which have not been seen in modern times."

Yes. In fact more than $100 Trillion have left planet forever, to sponsor alien abductions, auto-topsies and cattle mutations. More than 45 billion people have been captured by aliens but still US government does nothing. This because investment by alien powers continues and goes directly into pockets of VC, lawmakers, and Indian venture capitalists, who also are aliens in disguise. In fact, most people already been replaced by aliens which is why all Silicon Valley startups make junky equipment and sabotage US communications forever.

re: Carrier Spending Hopes Dim "Stirring hope in the hearts of optical and data networking equipment makers everywhere, BellSouth Corp. (NYSE: BLS - message board) is apparently on the verge of awarding multiple lucrative contracts as part of a major push to optimize its infrastructure to deliver data services."

Many managers/engineers pressed for time read only the headline and first paragraph. The first paragraph of the Bell South article (copied above) sounds very optimistic. So do the second and third paragraphs. It is not until the fourth paragraph that the reader encounters any indication of hedge or warning. This is not my idea of journalistic objectivity. But I concede that the fourth paragraph is indeed better than the last paragraph.

I do however, Scott, apologize for my sarcasm in the first post. I was reacting to the paragraph in yesterday's article in which LightReading was applying to itself a thorough pat on the back. I'm sure great effort goes into the Optical Oracle. Its value is determined by market demand.

re: Carrier Spending Hopes Dim Where the RBOC CAPEX money is really being spent may turn out to be a question they really don't want to answer. Just a guess on my part.

re: Carrier Spending Hopes Dim Uh, although I didn't read all of the posts on this subject, I don't see anyone pointing out the fact that, despite the fact that "no one's buying anything", the carriers shown in the chart will still spend something like $40 Billion this coming year.

So I still don't understand why this industry is in such shitty shape. If the spending were double, would really need the 500,000 additional jobs we've lost these last couple of years?

And please, no one tell me about how "companies have to lower their costs because Opex was too great". THAT I already know. But I can only conclude that the entire industry must have been completely mismanaged, and that's why we're all suffering for it. (In other words, companies just scooped up tons of people and engineers and just dumped them on problems and designs and whatnot like sprinkles on a Mr Softee cone, without any real planning, budgeting, or rational management.)

Am I wrong, or is it true that in an industry that will pull in over $40 Billion this year, there is there no good reason why this industry can't be very healthy right now. When customers start throwing away their phones, then some "legitmate" weakness will begin. We're paying the price for big-time incompetance.

Well, who's fault is that? You're going to flame LR because you didn't read the whole article? Grow up...
