re: Calix Reveals Its Fiber Future

I do not shill for any vendor, but I respectfully disagree with some of your remarks.

"My estimation is its the most widely deployed GBE ONT in NA"

Just how many GBE ONTs have been deployed in NA? GPON is going to remain the de facto standard for the next five years.

Calix cannot compete in this space."

Yes, it can. It just could compete more effectively, especially in getting Qwest's business, with the Occam solution because it had the potential to scale better.

"Its GPON ONT technology on the other hand was from Terawave - but faced stiff competition from other sources e.g Calix OSI acquisition."

My memory is that Calix did not have a GPON solution -- that is why it bought OSI. Heck, I don't think even OSI had a true GPON solution at the time.

"I am guessing that Carl Russo's pitch is all about customer acquisition not technology"

His philosophy has been consistent over the years. You go IPO to get unique technology, not to buy market share.

"Calix has no real internal IP anymore."

That is not true. One might argue that a challenge for Calix will be in executing product development of Occam, as it was with OSI, from Petaluma.

"...after that an access wireless company next or a metro DWDM access company e.g. Cyan."

Only if the wireless company gives it a clear technological advantage. I agree that Cyan would make a lot of sense -- it is just that Calix is totally focused on access.

"In fact I would go so far as to say that Carl does not know anything about the technology or product creation but he has a business instinct to latch onto a good thing and make himself megabucks in the process"

You are talking about one of the smartest and most knowlegeable guys in the industry. Just because he made megabucks during the bubble, does not mean that he is being unrealistic. This is a company that had to deal with the "anti-stimulus" (at least until next year), the recession, and large M&As. Where are these megabucks coming from with such a lousy economy?

"The reality of Calix - Many of the peripheral products are actually OEM out of China e.g. Xdsl pizaz boxes, Ethernet product line.’

You still need to address the point from frnkblk from another post: 'I'm not sure what your point is -- that Calix has to design it all from scratch...? I think most telecom buyers want a cost-effective product that works, will be supported, from a company that will be around for a long time. That it has be designed and made by the seller isn't typically high on my short list of requirements.'

re: Calix Reveals Its Fiber Future

Thanks for the clarification. However, just to be totally accurate, it was bollocks187 that made the statement and not Seven.

To clarify why brookseven wrote:

"Its" is Occam. I had to google "Terawave" to understand the intended meaning of brookseven's comment.

I'm not sure of the price points or realworld MTBF's of Occam's ONTs, but those two items help identify which ONT was better.

You're right, it was bollocks187. My bad for trying to use my memory rather than checking. =)
