re: BT Counters PBT Claims "That suggests BT has factored into its budgets the operational costs associated with deploying a pre-standards technology that currently does not come equipped with tried and tested management and monitoring tools."

This wasn't supposed to be the way 21CN was built. If you go back to the Matt Bross presentations, the idea was to take "off the shelf" technologies, in building block fashion and create a leading edge solution based on standards.

BT has a history of forcing manufacturers to develop bespoke solutions and technologies. Bross recognised the problems this causes in terms of higher support costs, and the inability to exploit cost savings brought by using standard kit.

One of the reasons BT is so vocal about PBT is to try and get other carriers interested so PBT "becomes standard". But Bross hasn't been as hands-on with the 21CN project recently, and I think while the cat's been away, the BT mice got a bit carried away.

re: BT Counters PBT Claims BT indeed hasn't abandoned the "we know technology better than anyone else and we will move this market our way" attitude.

They now do this by still getting vendors to build proprietary stuff, but then contractually requiring those vendors to push the proprietary stuff through the standardisation bodies. They also do it by founding their own quasi standardisation bodies (such as the MSF).

re: BT Counters PBT Claims Why has Matt not been recently involved in 21CN.

Is he distancing himself from the 21CN success ?

re: BT Counters PBT Claims There are some family issues that I think we all have to deal with from time to time. Not in the scope of this discussion.

re: BT Counters PBT Claims Ray Le Maistre, you need to try to think "outside the Cisco box". Reference to higher intial costs, investing in technologies not standardized; tough pill to swallow for you?

re: BT Counters PBT Claims Thanks Matt,

I don't understand what you're saying - can you elaborate?

And remember, I am the reporter here, writing about what is happening in the industry. Nothing is hard for me to swallow -- I am not on one side or the other here.

If people decided not to read daily news-based websites any more - that would be the tough pill for me. :-)
