re: Broadbanders Shoot for $100B Stimulus Where would you spend 100B in broadband? Are we talking tax incentive on projects or handing out more of the tax payer dollars to spend as they wish. If you state the goal of this money is to get a fiber from the nearest POP to the home, that might be worth while. But if you are talking about helping companies upgrade existing networks, this is a waste of money.

re: Broadbanders Shoot for $100B Stimulus $100B is $1k per household, which given the scale of this project should be enough to put govt owned fiber to each and every home. They could then lease it.

This would effectively nationalize the exiting telecom business.

Do we really want this?

re: Broadbanders Shoot for $100B Stimulus I suggest that none of the money be given to a company with more than $10MUSD in revenue. As Tom Friedman says (paraphrased), if you think the big guys are the ones to innovate, you are severely deluded.

PS. If you still believe there are free markets in this country, you are severely deluded as well. Either let the government do it or let smaller businesses do it but don't expect the top 3 in any industry to be an innovator.

re: Broadbanders Shoot for $100B Stimulus "if you think the big guys are the ones to innovate, you are severely deluded."

It's not about innovation, it's about execution. We're talking about millions of fiber 'loops', engineered, installed, provisioned, and maintained. Plus procurement, qualification and integration of network equipment and back office systems. Plus customer support. Not something that can be done out of somebody's basement. Or with an "innovation" mindset.

And besides, have you taken a look at some of what Verizon and their suppliers have been doing with FiOS? A lot of it (ClearCurve fiber, MOCA, all the improvements they've made in fiber construction for example) would qualify as "innovation" in my book. The difference being that all of it is driven to solve real problems they encounter in the field, not innovation for innovation's sake.
