A bit confused on the Iomega/Boxee announcment. Does the integration of storage mean that users can record streamed content? (i.e. a streaming box w/ DVR capability?)
That would really shake things up if Boxee allowed users to record streaming content, but the Iomega box doesn't enable that. But it would allow users to download video files, including those in MKV, AVI, and AAC format, and use the Boxee interface to pull up those files. In other words, Boxee owners that use BitTorrent and other file-sharing services could use this box to store and view thousands of TV shows and movies, including pirated content.
You're right, they don't come out and say whether this is storage w/DVR-like potential, so I can see the confusion... even from the more expanded blog post Boxee put up. Initially, it looks like they view it as a repository that can be tapped to sideload content and output it to the TV. JB
Such boxes for playing AAC, AVI, MKV already exist for quite some time, for example Popcorn Hour (www.popcornhour.com) and WDTV.
The thing is that Boxee also has a nice integration with online services such as Netflix and hopefully Hulu. So it is a über box with good publicty behind. It will probably succeed.
It is a waste of money to purchase these near-PC devices such the Boxee and Logitech Revue when you can do much more with a Eeebox PC series EB1006, B202,or the EB 1012.Just connect anyone of those bad boys to a wireless keyboard such as the Lenovo 57Y6336 multimedia remote,or the Logitech mini controller, and your done.Connect your flat screen of whatever size via HDMI, DVI,or component. You can even go further by adding a sling box and stream to your fancy setup. For the price of that DLink Boxee, Roxi, or any other device of that nature, one is better off with my suggestion.Even you had one of those all inclusive PCs like the IMac and others, you'll be better served to use those than a Boxee.
