Does anyone remember the DSL vs. Cable ad wars in the USA pitting neighbor against neighbor screaming, “Logoff! Logoff!” in order to demonstrate the ‘problem’ with shared access network technologies? Is that where we’re headed with AT&T Wireless?
After enticing users to sign up using all-you-can eat flat rate plans, it seems AT&T is hoping to turn the clock back with an ‘education’ program that reads more like a warning. The fact is that increased usage IS posing a challenge for 3G wireless operators in their radio network, their backhaul networks, and in their core networks. But these problems are solvable without 're-educating' subscribers. For example, AT&T could leverage other available wireless networks like Wi-Fi or WiMAX to seamlessly supplement wireless bandwidth. And there are numerous improvements in traffic backhauling with plenty of fiber in the ground in cities like New York and San Francisco. As for the mobile data core network, Stoke has created and patented a method for offloading mobile data core networks by as much as 90%.
When innovation is out there ready to solve problems like this, it begs the question why organizations like AT&T and their infrastructure vendors insist on keeping their heads in the sand.
I keep looking at that headline and thinking about SF sports teams. Sigh...
