re: AT&T Closer to 'One' With Itself AT&T can't manage what ever they get into anyways
so the looser will be whom ever AT&T picks.
My company was in a 2 year deal with ATT which
Dave Dorman headed up.The reason why it didn't
fly was because of management issues mostly
with AT&T. I was not impressed by the quality
of the network people at att either. That's because
AT&T lost a lot of their most experience people
do to cut backs and downsizing of last few years.
I am just glad when they split our venture up I
did not wind up and AT&T because I WOULD be
UNEMPLOYED like many of my other former colleauges
are.

re: AT&T Closer to 'One' With Itself funny how the article mentions that AT&T has shortlisted two vendors, and even though the article spells out more that two contenders to the party, after the article ends, LR only mentions two vendors, cisco and tellabs. Is there any connection?

re: AT&T Closer to 'One' With Itself What ever 'GOD BOX' ATT comes out with will be
costing a GODLY ammount of money. In order to
save money on it ATT will probably OUTSOURCE the
management of it to INDIA.

I deal with ATT on daily bases with Implementaion
issues involving ATM/FR and other Physical Layer
Edge,Customer issues.

re: AT&T Closer to 'One' With Itself Yes, telebud, I'm sure you're right. I'm sure the quality of the "network people" at AT&T is simply awful. Such a simple, unmanaged, cobbled-together conglomeration of boxes....

Guess again. I've been thrown out of ATT and I've won there, and the truth is that ATT's network engineers are top notch. Do you expect readers to believe that, generally speaking, they've thrown out the great engineers and kept the lousy ones? Please.

If Laurel, or Tellabs, or Juniper, or whoever wins this deal, it will result in mostly positive results, not the least of which is the requisite credibility to win in other Tier 1 accounts. Then you have other trivial things like revenue....

re: AT&T Closer to 'One' With Itself A recent interesting story I heard about a contractor in NJ AT&T hired to test Cisco routers in their labs. The "top-notch" contractor working in the lab found a serious bug and in sheer excitement entered it in the database as a highest severity one. Apparently, in AT&T the highest severity bugs are visible to the top people as well. The contractor had his contract terminated the same day. According to the manager who fired him "The contractor shot himself in the foot".

The other contractors at AT&T labs now don't enter bugs against Cisco until they consult with their managers first. When they do, they don't mark it highest severity.

re: AT&T Closer to 'One' With Itself It's Cisco because, well because they're Cisco (and because they said so), and Alcatel/TiMetra because, well because they're Alcatel, and anyone who knows about the AT&T/Alcatel relationship won't have to ask why (I would love to see the pictures Alcatel has on these folks).

re: AT&T Closer to 'One' With Itself "The other contractors at AT&T labs now don't enter bugs against Cisco until they consult with their managers first. When they do, they don't mark it highest severity".

That makes sense if your a contractor why do you
want to put your client in jeopardy?
Your Client could be distributing the product
you are working on to customers releasing all
the facts about a product could be detrimental
to yourself or the company you are contracting
for you don't want the whole world to know whats
going on.

But as far as this 'GOD BOX' goes. I think the
contractors are going to be Indians.
And there is NO SUCH THING as a SEEMLESS NETWORK!
Not just ATT but others as well are trying to sell
MPLS as a SEEMLESS NETWORK.
QOS includes the CORE and EDGE and internationally
that could be a big issue delivering a STABLE
MPLS environment.

re: AT&T Closer to 'One' With Itself Two vendors is what AT&T's CTO mentioned, but didn't say who. I'm leaning towards Alcatel and Laurel.
