Chatting to other editors, friends etc. it seems that 14th Street in NYC may have seen some of the biggest crowds for the launch. There may be a simple explanation for this: The SoHo store on Prince Street is closed for refurbs, so downtowners had to go to 14th Street or hike further uptown.
I was surprised how many people came without any idea what carrier they'd get. Verizon had the advantage then because it's people came over from their store to explain why they're better. Apple employees seemed to be leaning toward Verizon too.
I would not underestimate Snooki! Look at her capabilities. Then note, that she is famous and gets paid for it. Sorta like Madonna meets Courtney Love meets Heidi Fleiss.
