2) How does Google make money from it.

The same way that the Yellow Pages used to make a lot of money for the phone companies even though they were given out for free--advertising.

Why are they offering free GPS maps on these phones? So they can show advertiser locations on the map--a veritable gold mine. And that is just one application.

They thought they could do this with the iPhone, then realized that Apple had too tight control of the experience for them to be able to deploy all of the types of applications that they wanted (and that would make them money), so they came out with their own phone infrastructure, and offered it to the market for free.

Certainly some great initial success, but I have two main questions:

1) How does Android avoid kiling itself from fragmentation (the Java problem)

2) How does Google make money from it.

Also -- shameless pitch -- we were ahead of the curve with this report here. email me at [email protected] if you are interested:

Did we just make up Eric Ericsson, or is that a reference to Hakan Eriksson?

Hakan's got a cool name, but it would be higher on the list for me if he worked for Nokia or Nokia Siemens, for the confusion factor.

Michel Chbat of Nokia Siemens is good for pure spelling fun (good guy to talk to, as well).

Nope, Eric Ericsson is indeed real. I've shook his hand. You can also see him speak here:

Jef Graham, RGB.  His first name is 1/4 more efficient than mine, and makes anyone named Geoffrey look like a letter hog. Jeff
