re: 100-GigE, 40-GigE Live in Peace They would certainly be challanged with "...the 100-Gbit/s side, the standard will address distances of at least 10 km and 40 km on singlemode fiber; at least 100 km on multimode fiber; and at least 10 meters over copper."

100km over multimode for 100Gbps!

re: 100-GigE, 40-GigE Live in Peace Considering that 10G on multimore fiber reaches maybe a couple of hundred meters, 100G will reach less then a hundred.

Unless we're talking about parallel signals of course (ribbon fibers etc). In which case the 100G signal transports as multiple 10G/12.5G

re: 100-GigE, 40-GigE Live in Peace yeah, 1 km over mm fiber sounds better !!

re: 100-GigE, 40-GigE Live in Peace I believe it is definitely a typo. I do not see the logic for 100G over 100Km of MMF while it is on 10Km for SMF. Therefore, I think it is 100m on MMF. Even if it is ribbon fiber, it would be very expensive to
manufacture.

re: 100-GigE, 40-GigE Live in Peace That was my mistake. It was meant to be 100 meters on MMF. It has since been fixed.

I believe more than the cost of making a ribbon fiber will be the cost of first demultiplexing the 100G signal in many and then combining them again.

re: 100-GigE, 40-GigE Live in Peace When it is 100m on cat5, then we have a product.

re: 100-GigE, 40-GigE Live in Peace I found it interesting that 5% of the poll respondents think 100GigE products won't be sold for 10 more years.

You'd expect "more than 10 years" to get hardly any responses, but I have to admit 5% is more than I'd expected.

I'm wondering if those voters are just pessimistic, or just clowning around -- or if they're saying that 100-Gig will *never* be necessary.

Maybe these are the people who knows that this time Ethernet is going too fast then others. If we are talking about connection within 10-40 km then fine but if we are talking about hundres of Km then where is the transport systems i.e SONET,DWDM.

40Gb is still not that cheap (as far as i know) we are talking about 100Gb. Maybe u can throw some time on pricing of 40G.

Even if we talk about 10X10Gbps,Optical system which carry 160*10Gbps or 320X10Gbps wavelength take several 7 feet rack space if populated full capacity. Will they be able to make a businees case with these kind of equipments who takes too much space or too much of operating cost.
