re: Telcos Need Data Center Education
The "secretive" was in the context of being less open about reporting their CO/DC metrics and how they are improving them over time. Companies like FB and eBay are not only pushing the envelope on those metrics but are also more open about their practices and metric changes over time.

Wanlord has a correct assessment of Telco practices.

re: Telcos Need Data Center Education
nuker,

I guess you missed my point. wanlord is correct that NEBS does not apply to DCs. But telcos are not secretive. They build to standards. So, in a CO they used NEBS. That sets things like power dissipation in a given size of floor space so that they have built enough HVAC and power systems to handle it.

Now the big challenge is that DC equipment far exceeds the power density of NEBS. In the traditional world, that would have meant that a telco is leaving empty floor space to accommodate the extra power.

So, what I don't think you can expect is reporting out. What I think you can expect is building to standards.

Just because they quote some standards does not imply they will publish any empirical data.

re: Telcos Need Data Center Education
It's because their embarrassed and they likely don't have a good handle on the data/usage. NEBS are just standards they follow and don't always apply to Data Centers like they do Central Offices and doesn't mean the output is efficient just because they follow NEBS. You wouldn't believe the waste that goes on in that industry. They are not smart about it at all. The continue to expand into small data centers scattered around, constantly building, having people travel, slow processes that take forever to get new servers, apps, networks in place. Constant capacity issues and migrations. Over complexity in the network and not scalable at all. Instead of building out to support growth they constantly play catch up.

re: Telcos Need Data Center Education
Telcos are notoriously secretive about metrics related to their facilities. Though they may try to compute equivalent DSE metrics, it is very unlikely they will ever publish them. It is just not in their nature/culture to be open about such data.
