BALLMY ARMY
Also, once he puts the make-up on, the dude has a promising second career as a member of KISS.

Re: I LOVE THIS COMPANY!
Dan, you are an easy person to remember, so we can't give him too much credit there.

Re: I LOVE THIS COMPANY!
That's pretty impressive, Dan. I wonder how his employees feel about him and his leadership style.

Also, any thoughts on who might replace him? Someone internal or from the outside?

Re: I LOVE THIS COMPANY!
That's true, Carol. They would probably already have a replacement in mind if it was hostile. I don't think he was forced out, but I have a feeling it was a "mutual" decision that the time was right to move on. Something's got to give with Windows 8. It's tablets haven't taken off, and while the mobile OS beat out BlackBerry last quarter, it's still struggling too. Maybe a fresh face is needed.

Re: I LOVE THIS COMPANY!
I've met him twice, years apart, what was striking was that he remembered my name the second time around.

Ballmer Step Down
Microsoft has struggled to put a mobile strategy in place for years and whoever thought to partner with Nokia might think about leaving along with Ballmer.  Nokia, the former leader in mobile phones, was not the best choice to partner with.  Remember, this was the company that refused to have a flip-phone available in the US at a time when flip-phones probably made up 70% of sales, rather thinking that its candy-bar phone strategy would apply.  ????  Let's not even get into its smartphone strategy.  Microsoft might have to pay top price to bring in a leader who truly understands the mobile world and that's where you place all your chips.  And don't try wrapping your mobile strategy around existing strateies.  This might have been what happened when AT&T bought Cingular and introduced the 3G iPhone - seems like no one from Ma Bell understood the true impact of the device and apps on the mobile network and didn't plan well - the wireless world works differnetly than the wired world.

Re: I LOVE THIS COMPANY!
I think Microsoft was already facing major challenges when Ballmer stepped in. The handwriting was on the wall, even if the balance sheet didn't yet reflect it, and he was required to reshape the company's future.

It also seems unlikely that a company pushing its CEO out the door would then appoint a committee to replace him. That's like telling your partner you are in love with someone else, then going on match.com to find the someone else.

I LOVE THIS COMPANY!
I've had the pleasure of seeing Ballmer speak a number of years at CES. There's no one quite like him when it comes to revving up the crowd. His speeches have been subjected to a number of remixes and highlight reels. Here's one to check out, just don't turn the volume up too loud:
