Eh, technically speaking, security isn't strictly "essential" either (though highly desirable).  Security and accessibility are the archnemeses of each other.  Perfect security means complete inaccessibility, and perfect accessibility means complete insecurity.  Accessibility of some non-zero degree is vital (and the whole reason we're talking about this subject to begin with -- because these technologies and platforms and standards help enable accessibility) for what we are talking about.  Security, strictly speaking, is not.

But that said, from a practical perspective, yes, it should be secure -- just as every technological solution should be secure.
