U.S. cable operator Mediacom Communications Corp. is partnering with Sprint to support its planned VoIP rollout starting in the first half of 2005. Under the agreement, Sprint will assist Mediacom with VoIP provisioning, switching, termination of traffic to the public switched telephone network (PSTN), delivery of E-911 services and local number portability, as well as operator and directory services. This is Sprint's second cable deal. Time Warner Cable is partnering with both Sprint and MCI on PSTN termination, long distance, regulatory and back-office support. For these items, Time Warner is rumored to be paying Sprint about $15 a month per voice subscriber. Mediacom, which lacks Time Warner's scale and is outsourcing more of its voice operation, is likely paying more.
