Maxed Out

6:00 PM -- Intel Corp. (Nasdaq: INTC) just can't stop spending on WiMax this week. After bankrolling the all-new Clearwire LLC (Nasdaq: CLWR), the silicon giant is now spending $26 million on a Swedish spectrum license so it can bring WiMax to the Scandoids. Intel has now literally spent billions trying to kickstart WiMax. Some might wonder why it is prepared to gamble so much on the wireless broadband technology.

If we look back to the lessons of Centrino and WiFi it becomes more understandable. Intel spent like a European tourist on a whirlwind shopping tour of NYC then, too. Why? Because WiFi opened up the wireless market to a device that Intel can really shift silicon on -- the notebook computer.

A WiMax notebook with Intel silicon is one of the first gizmos that is being tested for the WiMax network. Intel is hoping to repeat its WiFi experience with WiMax and have its chipsets in other form factors, too.
