PITTSBURGH -- Marconi (LONDON: MNI), a global supplier of advanced communications solutions, announced today that its Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) optical networking solutions will be at the heart of a new multi-terabit fibre optic showcase network stretching across more than 30 of Germany's major cities.

As part of a contract with Fibernet, Marconi will deliver a network of almost unlimited bandwidth, which will allow Fibernet to deploy key services like wholesale Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) access and IP-based virtual private networks (VPNs), to business customers in 32 cities throughout the country.

The network will be built under a three-phase agreement that will see Marconi supply Fibernet with advanced Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) and DWDM equipment, along with its MV36/38 graphical network management system. Marconi will also undertake all network implementation up to commercial launch.

Capable of supporting 80 separate channels at speeds of up to 10Gbps per channel, Marconi's point-to-point DWDM solution will be used to deliver high- speed data services to business clients in major commercial centers throughout Germany. As well as providing Fibernet's customers with almost unlimited bandwidth, the new Marconi DWDM solution will give Fibernet the opportunity to provide exclusive individual optical wavelengths to carrier and ISP/ASP customers, which, coupled with its national co-location services, will allow the extremely rapid deployment of new national services.
