Marconi Communications is set to launch a new enterprise to develop world-leading optical communication systems. The SOLSTIS venture will operate as a virtual start-up from purpose-built premises in Stratford-Upon-Avon, UK and is part of a strategy to empower fast-moving teams to rapidly bring to market products utilising critical advanced technologies.

SOLSTIS will develop new systems capable of transmission speeds in excess of 1 Tbit/s (1000 Gbit/s) over thousands of kilometres, eliminating the current need for high cost regeneration of the optical signals. The project will utilise WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) techniques and exploit leading-edge optical amplifiers, to meet the expected demand for ultra high-speed long haul data transmission as internet traffic continues its explosive growth over the next few years.

The SOLSTIS project team ,lead by Prof Nick Doran, will include members formally with the Photonics Research Group at Aston University, UK. The project will utilise dispersion-managed solitons, a concept pioneered and developed by the team from Aston who have demonstrated world record transmission distances at 10 and 40Gb/s using this technique
