So, who should win these awards, in your view?

Given the breadth of the nominees, I wonder if there is value on an award that is so broad? How do you compare the value of a Base Station with that of a Tablet or Handset?

There's definitely a value in trying to assess how influential a product or tech is in a sector.

But you're correct in implying that handing out awards is often a subjective exercise. There is no algorithm to decide the "Best Picture" Oscar and there is no easy answer for why one service or product beats out another, even though they don't go head-to-head in the marketplace.

That is precisely why we open this up for discussion, poll our readers, and try to get as much feedback on our Finalist list as possible.

Good luck to all the finalists of 2010 Leading Lights. I think Light Reading should broaden its scope of awards to public sector entities that have been innovative as well.  Many municipal networks have been functioning as regional service providers that offer innovative service offerings comparable or better than some nationwide service providers (DC-Net is a great example!)

Thanks -- that's an interesting idea.  We'll have to keep it in mind for next year.  (And in case we forget, feel free to ping us with nominee ideas in 2011.)

I like that idea, too. Munis just might be the future of big broadband in the US once we see how the stimulus fizzles and does nothing to help our broadband rankings.
