Light Reading Poll: What Will Nokia Be in 2014?

Only one thing is clear after Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK)'s massive restructuring announcement Thursday: Change is afoot at the beleaguered handset maker. (See Nokia Cuts 10,000 Jobs, Restructures and Euronews: Carnage at Nokia.)

Whether those changes have the desired effect or not, however, is another matter.

Either way, Nokia may be a somewhat different animal in two years' time. Let us know what you think about the Finnish company's future prospects by voting in the poll below. And, if your answer is "other," feel free to elaborate on our message boards below.

I voted Microsoft, I don't get what Samsung would gain by buying Nokia right now.

Microsoft no way.  Smart phones are only part of the business and Nokia is a very small player there.  What is big is their non-smart phone business and that is a volume play market and that is what samsung would want... marketshare and volumes...

And potentially move the bottom end to Android 2.3 or Bada

I think, Nokia and Microsoft will form a joint venture NOKIASOFT and then they will buyout RIM. World is rapidly moving towards Smart Phones and the collaboration between Microsoft and Nokia will help in bringing the cost of smartphones at par with feature phones (Non Smart Phones). Acquiring RIM will give NOKIASOFT a additional thrust in business phone segment plus additional customers. Also NOKIASOFT will launch its Unique TABLET based on Windows 8 and then Windows 9 platform. By 2015 NOKASOFT and APPLE will have Tablet Market share in 30%:50% ratio with 20% rest. Also NOKIASOFT will reach to TOP position toppling SAMSUNG in Mobile Phones.

All this will start by 2014 ad by 2015 we can expect NOKIASOFT TV, NOKIASOFT TABLETS, NOKIASOFT SMART PHONES, NOKIASOFT SMART WATCHES and even NOKIASOFT software enabled SMART Automobiles (Having capability to reach destination in shortest time without external GPS Navigator and yes without any driver, just sit and enjoy)  capturing the market.

But afterall, this is only a prediction and mine guess and i am not a futur teller.

Still independent.

Microsoft is deadly and poisonous for anything they touch. I'm guessing Finish government will pull some strings (don't underestimate personal connections and importance of Nokia for Finland) and detach Nokia from Microsoft entirely, then decontaminate the company from Microsoft, purify and sanitize.

Once entirely healed from the disease known as Microsoft, Nokia can move on to Android platform and things will get better.

In couple of years Nokia could be really important player as it was once.

The question is: is Nokia totally insane to pursue Microsoft relationship or is there some common sense left?

Just my 2 cents worth...

Oh, yeah, almost forgot... Linux rulez! :)

My heart says independent - I would hate to see Nokia vanish into the Microsoft void or just crash and burn. Plus it's hard to believe Finland would allow such a mainstay to go, if the government is able to do anything about it.

Head is rather saying it will be be bought by a larger vendor that will then cherry pick the best bits and chuck out the rest. I hope that doesn't happen.
