Katrina & the Waves

12:40 PM -- There's no need to spend a lot of time surfing around aimlessly for storm relief info. Here are the only links you'll ever need to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina:

  • FEMA's extremely helpful volunteer/donation list
  • If you know anyone in New Orleans who has made it out, help them get disaster assistance. Also, if they're trying to find housing or connect with other folks, there are some helpful message boards right here.
  • Amazon.com's American Red Cross donation page (donate online)
  • On eBay you can buy a Dukes of Hazzard lunch box and help storm victims. Or somesuch. I don't know. Click here.

Remember: it's good to get in a giving mood, but don't be a sucker.

re: Katrina & the Waves We just launched a free telephone-based open voicemail system to help folks find their families and friends - more info at www.contactlovedones.org. Anything anyone can do to get the word out in the affected areas will be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Dan Schoeffler

re: Katrina & the Waves
Sick fraudsters are using the tragic events in New Orleans and the Southern U.S. to defraud unsuspecting users with elaborate email scams, warns the U.S Department of Homeland Security.

In the aftermath of hurricane Katrina, the DepartmentGÇÖs U.S Computer Emergency Response Team (US-Cert) has received reports of multiple sites attempting to trick users into donating money to fraudulent organizations. This form of scam, known as phishing, has already caused concern in other parts of the IT industry and the U.S. government.

Officials warn that the latest spate of phishing emails may appear as requests from a charitable organization asking users to click on a link. They are then taken to a bogus Website, where they are asked for their personal information.

re: Katrina & the Waves Even though I've already produced the only list of relief links you'll ever need, you can let me know what I missed by posting it here on the only Hurricane Relief Message Thread you'll ever need.

Cheers,
Phil
