Although it hasn't struck gold in North America yet, Kasenna is making some strong early inroads into the global IPTV business. A Silicon Valley startup, the software supplier has notched network-based digital video recorder (DVR) deals with such leading European IPTV providers as Italy's Fastweb, Spain's JazzTel and Switzerland's TV Sierre.
Thanks to these deals, Kasenna said its PortalTV suite is now enabling nDVR service for hundreds of thousands of IPTV subscribers around the world. In particular, the firm credits its MediaBase software, designed to let IPTV providers deploy full DVR services across their networks. The company also asserts that MediaBase nDVR delivers lower operating costs than premises-based DVRs because nDVR users don't need disk-based set-top boxes, which are more prone to failure than network solutions.
