PETAH TIKVA, Israel -- The Israeli Defence Force (IDF) revealed that it has completed the final stages of a three-year project to build a comprehensive, large-scale SDH based telecommunications infrastructure. The tender for SDH transmission equipment was awarded to ECI Telecom company (ECI Telecom: NASDAQ:ECIL) Lightscape Networks above several other leading telecommunications equipment providers, on the technical strength of its solutions and their suitability for IDF's specific needs. The project, in which Lightscape Networks is a main supplier, is valued at NIS 100 Million (approximately US $20m - 25m) over the three-year period, and involved enhancing IDF's original network. Its main objectives were to strengthen and extend communications services in IDF's camps and to ensure the fast deployment of a communications network. This undertaking has now been declared a complete success by the Defence Forces, having met the original set deadlines, budget and technological targets. Besides the provision of SDH telecommunications equipment the IDF project included SDH radio, advanced synchronisation systems, management systems, an ATM data network and other unique systems. All elements were then integrated together to form a high capacity, high performance networking system.
