iPad Apps vs. iPhone Apps

10:05 AM -- App store analyst Distimo has compiled numbers showing which types of apps are most popular on the Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPad so far.

Gaming and entertainment apps rank high, as they do on the iPhone. But categories like news, books, productivity, and education are ranked notably higher on the iPad than on the iPhone. (To see chart, click here.)

Of course, this is all subject to change, considering only about 2,500 apps are currently available for the iPad, compared to 150,000 on the iPhone.

In other Apple news:

  • Apple is working on a smaller version of the iPad, to be released in early 2011, according to Digitimes Research. The device would be five to seven inches, priced under $400, and used primarily for reading.

  • Apple's famous, long-running "Get a Mac" commercial campaign might be over, according to one of its stars, Justin Long, who plays the hip Mac. In an interview with The AV Club, he said:
You know, I think they might be done. In fact, I heard from John [Hodgman, who plays "The PC" in the commercials], I think they’re going to move on. I can’t say definitively, which is sad, because not only am I going to miss doing them, but also working with John. I’ve become very close with him, and he’s one of my dearest, greatest friends. It was so much fun to go do that job, because there’s not a lot to it for me. A lot of it is just keeping myself entertained between takes, and there’s no one I’d rather do it with than John.
    You're welcome.
