Invasion of the Boston Snatchers

2:30 PM -- Here's the one thing I don't understand about the Cartoon Network "suspect device" debacle in Boston this week. Even if the people on the ground and the reporters covering this terror alert had never seen the cult show in question, why did no one stop and say: "Hold on, that looks like a space invader!"

Don't get me wrong, I'm not questioning the wisdom of checking out suspicious packages. I think its hugely important. After all, I grew up in London when the IRA was still a real and serious threat and --back in 1999 -- I was just turning the corner on Old Compton Street in Soho when a nail bomb detonated in a pub at the other end of the street. Not a pretty sight.

So, real suspicious packages are pretty scary for me. Even before 9/11 I reported unattended bags on subways and outside buildings to the NYPD (and got far less concern than this incident did I might add). That's just the thing though -- they're usually objects that can be hidden in plain sight. Not a lite brite space invader sign giving you the finger from atop a bridge.
