Interoute Meshes Europe

Interoute Telecommunications Ltd. is the latest European service provider to come out with a multipoint, wide-area network (WAN) Ethernet service, claiming the biggest coverage in Europe with connections in 61 cities.

Interoute has been offering a mixture of metro and long-haul services in its 21 European metro-area networks (MANs), but now it’s adding a multipoint service with extended geographic reach to its roster.

Multipoint services hold a particular attraction for organizations with a large number of offices. Rather than having to buy individual point-to-point connections to link each site, in effect creating their own somewhat clumsy mesh network, they can buy a single networked service to do the job for them -- for less money and less of a headache.

A recent RHK Inc. study found 93 percent of users were willing to increase their investments in WAN services if it meant they would be able to cut overall IT spending (see RHK: Enterprises Demand WAN Ethernet). But there was often a problem finding a provider that actually offered coverage in every city where they had an office.

“The demand is there, but not all our participants were able to get the services they wanted,” writes senior analyst Brian Van Steen.

Table 1, generated from Light Reading's Ethernet Services Directory, shows how Interoute’s new offering compares with multipoint WAN services offered by some of the other major pan-European providers.

The directory lists a total of 51 European providers offering a national or international multipoint service in the WAN, as well as an additional number of operators outside Europe providing connections into key cities.

Interoute says revenues from its MAN and WAN Ethernet services have grown by 150 percent in the last year. It’s the same story for carriers across Europe, which, during earnings season, have pointed to Ethernet in particular as helping to boost their revenues (see for example THUS Reports Annual Results).
