Interactive TV Is Coming

1:20 PM -- ESPN just announced a deal with Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ) for a fantasy football app exclusive to FiOS customers (for now). AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) recently did something similar with Yahoo Inc. (Nasdaq: YHOO). We all know about the interesting stuff that DirecTV is doing with all kinds of sports.

It all adds up to some encouraging movement for true interactive television apps. If you’re like me, as you sat through countless evangelical presentations over the years about the promise of interactivity and television, you couldn’t help but replace the commentary with “yadda, yadda, yadda...”

But we’re beginning to turn the corner. Sports is obviously fertile ground for interactive app development. But we’re also seeing things like the AT&T U-verse Bar, TV Caller ID, and a variety of widgets across both telco TV and cable platforms. There are more interesting things coming soon to the TV, including visual voicemail, click to call, and social networking. Maybe we can start to pay attention again to the interactive TV preachers.
