Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW), a leading optical layer company and IntelliSense Corporation, a leading MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) supplier, today announced that they have entered into a joint development agreement to focus on the design, development and fabrication of optical-communications products based on MEMS technology. As part of the agreement, Corning has made an equity investment in IntelliSense; additional terms were not disclosed.

"MEMS" stands for Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems, or small electrical/mechanical devices. MEMS exploit the existing microelectronics infrastructure to create micron-size complex machines (100 microns corresponds to the diameter of a human hair). The integration of IntelliSense's MEMs fabrication and design experience and Corning's optical component and module design and manufacturing experience will expedite the deployment of MEMs technology in communications applications.
