Insight Records Strong Q1 Results

Continuing the string of mostly robust MSO results, Insight Communications reported strong subscriber gains across the board in the first quarter. Insight, the nation's ninth largest MSO with 1.3 million subscribers, registered its best returns on the broadband front. The company signed up 44,400 high-speed data customers in Q1, up 19% from the year-ago period, to boost its total cable modem customer count to 514,800. That's enough to give the company a broadband penetration rate of 21.6%. In another healthy showing, Insight added 41,700 digital cable subscribers, up 34,000 from last year's gain. As a result, the MSO closed out March with 560,500 digital customers, lifting its digital penetration rate to 45.0%. Turning to the phone business, Insight rang up 9,800 cable telephony subscribers in the winter quarter, up 5,500 from the year-ago period. With the increase, the MSO's voice customer count climbed to 99,700, giving it a 12% penetration rate of marketable homes. The company said it plans to roll out VoIP, which now accounts for about 65% of its phone subscribers, to all its cable systems by the end of the year. Finally, Insight netted 25,100 basic cable customers in Q1, up from a loss of 1,100 subscribers in last year's first quarter. With all the gains, the MSO now has nearly 2.5 million revenue generating units (RGUs), up 15% from a year ago.
