GLASGOW, U.K. -- Infinera, the provider of optical networking systems based on photonic integrated circuits (PICs), is to highlight recent advances in PICs at the European Conference on Optical Communications in Glasgow, Scotland.

"With the recent announcement that FLAG Telecom has deployed the Infinera DTN optical platform, we now have Infinera DTNs carrying live traffic for network operators in Europe, North America and Asia," said Dave Welch, founder and Chief Strategy Officer of Infinera. "We're pleased to have the opportunity at ECOC to further describe the photonic integration technology at the heart of those networks."

Dr. Welch will present an invited talk on Tuesday titled, "Managing Bits Instead of Waves: Large-Scale Photonic Integrated Circuits Enable Implementation of Multi-Wavelength 'Digital' Optical Networks." In this talk, Dr. Welch will describe performance characteristics as well as system and network-level implications of Infinera's monolithically integrated PICs.

Radha Nagarajan, Infinera's Director of Advanced PIC Development, presents a paper on a novel uncooled 100Gb/s photonic integrated circuit capable of operating over a wide temperature range. The development of coolerless PICs is significant as it indicates the potential of PICs to serve in both new applications and harsher environments.
