Independent VoIP Providers Move Ahead

While cable operators and the RBOCs gear up to introduce IP telephony service, several independent voice over IP (VoIP) providers are still moving briskly ahead with their rollout plans. In the latest instance today, Vonage Holdings Corp. extended service to yet another local market--Des Moines, Iowa. Vonage, which now offers service to 125 markets in the U.S., Canada and beyond, boasts more than 300,000 customers. And it's adding more than 30,000 lines a month. Meanwhile, Skype, which offers VoIP service largely over the computer, notched a deal with Logitech, a leading PC headset maker, to work together on marketing and promotional ventures. The partnership will start with a free trial offer of SkypeOut, a pre-pay service that lets Skype users call traditional phone numbers, to consumers who buy Logitech USB headsets in the U.S., Canada and Europe.
