SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Due to the strength of emerging Asian and European Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) markets, the DSL and Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) industry remained successful for many DSLAM equipment manufacturers in 2001, according to In- Stat/MDR. The high-tech research firm projects that increased deployment of remote DSL Central Office (CO) equipment, expansion in regional markets including Europe, China, Korea and Japan, and technical improvements in technology that provide new and innovative services to customers, will further drive both revenues and port shipments upwards in 2002 and beyond. Growth in DSLAM ports will increase from just over 19 million in 2001 to approximately 47 million in 2006, representing a CAGR of 19.7%. "Some very exciting changes are currently taking place in the DSL and DSLAM market," according to Ernie Bergstrom, a Senior Analyst with In-Stat/MDR. "2001 proved to be a corrective year for the DSL market, and the telecommunications industry is now free to look ahead at what lies beyond the DSLAM." As a result, a tremendous amount of DSLAM-related development activity is underway within the industry. The challenges of integrating various multiplexers and gateways is giving way to new service creation switches, which are not to unlike the multiservices DSLAM switching architecture. The future of DSLAM switches looks very promising with, gateways, and access devices culminating into one system that does it all. As a result, service providers will have enormous latitude in designing future networks. The report, "DSLAMs Drive Dynamic Broadband Deployment" (#IN020213WN) examines the newest DSLAM technology and provides an overall DSL and DSLAM technology review, capped by an extensive discussion of the trends in the market. A worldwide and regional DSLAM forecast and a five-year view of what lies ahead for DSL and the DSLAM market are also provided. In-Stat/MDR
