SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Due to the strength of emerging Asian and European Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) markets, the DSL and Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) industry remained successful for many DSLAM equipment manufacturers in 2001, according to In- Stat/MDR. The high-tech research firm projects that increased deployment of remote DSL Central Office (CO) equipment, expansion in regional markets including Europe, China, Korea and Japan, and technical improvements in technology that provide new and innovative services to customers, will further drive both revenues and port shipments upwards in 2002 and beyond. Growth in DSLAM ports will increase from just over 19 million in 2001 to approximately 47 million in 2006, representing a CAGR of 19.7%. The challenges of integrating various multiplexers and gateways is giving way to new service creation switches, which are not to unlike the multiservices DSLAM switching architecture. As a result, service providers will have enormous latitude in designing future networks.
