Hamamatsu introduces high performance TOSA for gigabit Ethernet and fiber channel applications

BRIDGEWATER, NJ -- Hamamatsu Corporation introduces the L9278-14 TOSA (Transmitter Optical Sub-Assembly) that features a 1310 nm FP (Fabry-Perot) laser diode and a conventional 1.25 mm diameter TOSA-type sleeve. Combining the inherent advantages of the TOSA design with Hamamatsu's high reliability and proven performance, the L9278-14 can be used in a wide array of optical fiber communication applications, including Gigabit Ethernet and Fiber Channel.

With a high-speed response of 2.5 Gbps and 0.2 mW optical output, the L9278-14 has the performance necessary for 1310 nm applications. It has a typical spectral half width of 1.0 nm. The FP laser diode also has typical rise/fall times of 200 psec and a maximum dark current of 100 nA.

Engineers realize a number of benefits due to the L9278-14's small size. It reduces the amount of required board space, thereby providing additional design flexibility. There is also a financial savings associated with the TOSA's compact design. Despite its small size, the L9278-14 consists of a high-speed FP laser diode, optical isolator, and a rear facet monitor diode, which allows for external optical power control.

The L9278-14 is part of Hamamatsu's family of TOSAs, which are optically matched with Hamamatsu's ROSAs (Receiver Optical Sub-Assemblies) to form an ideal solution for transmission of optical signals.
