Google's Web Convergence

2:45 PM -- Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) is the latest major tech firm to get into the 'one (phone) number to ring them all' game with the buyout of Fremont, Calif.-based startup GrandCentral.

Google's play is perhaps a little more Web-based than some rival offerings from the likes of BlackBerry , which has a system that lets desk-calls follow the BlackBerry when they are mobile. (See RIM's Corporate Call.) The GrandCentral Web application lets users enter their phone details then decide which ring, dependent on who is calling.

The online approach clearly makes sense for the big G, which already has a bundle of Internet productivity and information management applications. It will be interesting to see how the firm integrates the convergence piece with its email or Google Talk VOIP service.
