At yesterday's press event in San Francisco, Google officials stressed that they're just trying stuff out, starting from scratch to build a computer engineered for a Web-driven world.
They wouldn't say that this will do anything like topple Windows. But executives had no problem saying they hope this changes the world, whether or not it's Chrome OS that becomes the dominant force. And they did their best to make a big deal out of this launch.
