Google 'Bias' Update

6:00 PM -- Our crack(ed) Web team has provided Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) with some research backing up our recent claim that Light Reading's news stories simply aren't getting picked up as often as some similar articles from vastly inferior news outlets.

And -- shock! horror! -- they replied.

One oddity our Web team pointed out was that our news.google.com referrals for Light Reading fell through the floor at about the same time that our search referrals from www.google.com skyrocketed. We had no explanation.

Now we do. Sort of. An unnamed emailer from "The Google Team" writes:

We've recently made a few changes to our system that should facilitate the inclusion of your articles in Google News. We should begin to crawl more articles from your site within a few weeks.

Wonder what changes they made?

And does anyone believe that "lowercase google only" crap?— Phil Harvey, Google Editor, Light Reading

About the Author(s)

Phil Harvey

Editor-in-Chief, Light Reading

Phil Harvey has been a Light Reading writer and editor for more than 18 years combined. He began his second tour as the site's chief editor in April 2020.

His interest in speed and scale means he often covers optical networking and the foundational technologies powering the modern Internet.

Harvey covered networking, Internet infrastructure and dot-com mania in the late 90s for Silicon Valley magazines like UPSIDE and Red Herring before joining Light Reading (for the first time) in late 2000.

After moving to the Republic of Texas, Harvey spent eight years as a contributing tech writer for D CEO magazine, producing columns about tech advances in everything from supercomputing to cellphone recycling.

Harvey is an avid photographer and camera collector – if you accept that compulsive shopping and "collecting" are the same.
